A new chapter in China’s photovoltaic industry – the localization process of solar cell backplates. In the field of renewable energy, solar power generation is gradually becoming an important component of the global energy structure. As an important component of solar cell modules, the solar cell back panel plays a crucial role in protecting the solar cell and extending the service life of the modules. However, for a long time, China’s solar panel backplate market has mainly relied on imported products, which not only increases costs but also limits the development space of the domestic photovoltaic industry. With the continuous innovation of technology and the support of national policies, domestic solar panel companies in China are accelerating their pace, promoting import substitution, and injecting new impetus into the development of China’s photovoltaic industry. Market demand and challenges coexist. In recent years, China’s photovoltaic installed capacity has continued to grow. As of the end of 2021, the cumulative photovoltaic installed capacity in China has exceeded the 300 million kilowatts mark, firmly ranking first in the world. Such a huge market size poses a huge demand for solar cell backboards. At the same time, in order to meet the requirements of high efficiency and long lifespan, solar cell backplates need to have excellent weather resistance, water resistance, and insulation performance, which poses extremely high requirements for material selection and production processes. Technological progress leads the wave of localization. Faced with enormous market demand and technological challenges, Chinese solar panel manufacturers have increased their research and development investment, continuously improving product quality and technological level. By introducing advanced production equipment and independently developing new materials such as fluorine film and TPT, Chinese enterprises have been able to produce high-quality backboard products that are comparable to or even surpass international peers. The emergence of these products has greatly promoted the localization process of solar cell backplates. The government’s supportive policies have also greatly promoted the localization of solar cell backplates, supporting the development of the industry through policy support. For example, the 14th Five Year Plan clearly proposes to accelerate the development of non fossil fuels and increase the proportion of clean energy consumption; Meanwhile, for photovoltaic projects that use local components, the government may provide certain subsidies and support. The implementation of these policies has made the use of domestically produced solar cell backplates more economically attractive, further accelerating the process of import substitution. The future outlook foresees that with the maturity of technology and the decrease in costs, domestic solar cell backboards will gradually occupy more market share. This will be beneficial for enhancing the competitiveness of the entire photovoltaic industry chain, reducing the construction cost of photovoltaic power stations, and promoting the popularization and application of new energy. In addition, the promotion of localization will also drive the rapid development of related supporting industries, form a complete supply chain system, and lay a solid foundation for China to win a greater voice in the global photovoltaic market. The localization of solar cell backplates is an important link in the upgrading and replacement of China’s photovoltaic industry. Driven by national policies and market demand, Chinese local enterprises are embracing challenges with an innovative attitude and striving to transform from followers to leaders. We have reason to believe that in the near future, high-quality solar panels made in China will be distributed in every corner of the world, contributing to the green transformation of human society.
