According to the latest report from market research firm Counterpoint Research, global shipments of XR headsets experienced a serious decline in 2023, with an annual decrease of 19%. This data reflects the ongoing challenges in the XR market, mainly due to a lack of top-notch products that are attractive enough to consumers, as well as a lack of eye-catching gaming and application cases. However, the launch of two highly anticipated new products – Sony PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2) and Meta Quest 3- has brought a glimmer of hope to this market. Last year, Meta accounted for 59% of the total global shipment of XR head mounted display devices, down from 77% in 2022. Its shipment volume also experienced an annual decrease of 38%, mainly due to the intensified market competition caused by the launch of Sony PSVR2. Meta launched Quest 3 in October last year, becoming the best-selling XR head mounted display device in the fourth quarter of last year, accounting for more than half of its sales. Quest 3 has brought multiple key enhancements compared to the previous generation of products, including significantly improved movie through technology, which builds upon the hybrid reality (MR) capabilities previously provided by enterprise level Quest Pro. However, it is worth noting that the shipment volume of Quest 3 decreased by 33% compared to Quest 2’s launch quarter. This is mainly due to the high price of Quest 3, coupled with the continuous supply of Quest 2 and competition from other head mounted display devices, which has led to a decrease in the shipment volume of the latest head mounted display devices. Overall, although the XR market has faced challenges in 2023, with the launch of new products such as Sony’s PSVR2 and Meta Quest 3, as well as continuously enhancing technology and features, people’s expectations for this field remain very optimistic.
